Chapter 6 : Divide and Conquer (Team Tonbo Survival Exercise )

Sumiyaka-kun was still watching the body of Tonbo. "Is that a good idea?" he asked, but he was curious too to see what would happen.

As the Yamanaka girl would touch her sensei performing her special technique her body would fall down motionless as usual. However the usual after that didn't happen, by usual meaning that Yorukasa would take control over the touched body.

Instead a smirk would appear on the face of their Sensei showing he was awake and conscious followed by a devilish grin and a chuckle which was definitely not Yorukasa's.
"One down...two to go." The Jounin laughed a sinister laughter as he sat there upon the large rock.

With that the Jounin would strike his palms together as a large rock wall made of Doton chakra charged earth would rise between the two left over students, Yorukasa's body would find itself ontop of this wall, the wall being wide enough for her to lay on safely without much danger of falling.

However the moment the wall's shadow would touch the man he would disperse into a cloud of smoke leaving behind nothing but a little gift wrapped present box of dark purple color there in his stead.

Yorukasa would expect herself to appear behind the so-called wheel of the body she attempted to inhibit however instead she would find herself some place she had never been before.
It looked like a hospital of sorts, at least that is what it probably would remind her off.
A dim lit monotone building with lots of large rooms and large windows. However outside the windows there was pitch black darkness rather than light and sealing symbols were placed on each window as well as on almost every door in the facility, some spots on the ground also had seals placed there, it was in fact like a giant maze of sealing symbols covering the area, in front of her and past the door to her right she would see a different image, there would be thin paper doors of a dark purple color with butterfly patterns drawn on it in gold, or was it a dragonfly, the patterns weren't that detailed. These doors she found in front of her leading further pass the end of the hallway, 7 doors one after another
And to her right there was a stairway leading upwards into something of a bright wall of light and a stairway leading downwards into pitch black darkness.
Where was this place and how did she get here in the first place, it was dimly lit, and very quite aside from the sounds she made, the place also seemed to be a little damp for some reason a thin layer of water spreading over the ground and sounds that reminded one of leaky pipes could be heard before then as if from behind walls somewhere far away Yorukasa would hear a male voice screaming in pain and agony as if being tortured then a loud smacking sound followed and the voice would fall silent again the whole area returning to that silent state.

Sumiyaka grumbled and renewed his fighting position, staring at their sensei with the byakugan. He kept his eyes on him when he shifted into the shadow, trying to track him. Now it was sure to him they had to defend themselves and either defeat him or keep standing as long as possible. He had no idea what to expect, but he knew just walking up to Tonbo had been stupid. He also cursed himself for not stopping Yorukasa. 'stupid stupid...Well Tonbo-sensei, you surprised us there. I guess you want us to try and defeat you?' he asked loudly in his head. He also wasn't sure if Tonbo was still looking through his Byakugan or not. "Shikataro-kun! Keep your wits about you! He's around somewhere. Lets leave Yorukasa there, she seems safe for now!" he called out to his friend.

Sumiyaka was unable to sense the Sensei anywhere, nor see him with his 360 vision of the byakugan. Telescopic vision could still be used to deal with this problem however then he'd need to figure out the direction first in which he had to look which was only slightly better than simply looking.
How was his Sensei able to escape his Byakugan like that. Wasn't it supposed to not have any blind spots and such?
He would also notice his Sensei was well prepared as he couldn't see the contents of the box, he could only see the outside. He has heard of this before, such seals are placed all over the Hyuuga compound itself, any spy barriers that prevent chakra penetration and by that stop the Byakugan from looking through it, among other things. He was used to those and this wouldn't be a surprise for him, it would just show that his Sensei was well prepared and well aware of each of their individual abbilities. To him though this was normal and not unusual as Hyuuga often trained within the perimiters of their compound and watching your uncle sitting on the toilet for example while in mid training is the last thing you want, same goes for him. But the primary reason for the Hyuuga applying those seals was to prevent the branch-house of the Hyuuga to look in on the Main-house's secret training among other things that went on in there.

Shikataro would now hear a chuckle in his mind and then would hear his Sensei's voice.
"Wow! When you get back home today tell your dad from me that he is a genius. The mental defenses he placed inside your mind protecting your Clan secrets are quite intensive."

"Now you are all probably thinking what is the point of this survival exercise, aren't you? That's good. But, that in itself is perhaps the whole point of this exercise....figuring out what's going on and what to do." The voice added and then laughed as it would then turn silent again.

Where the hell was he?

The moment Yorukasa would reach out to open the first door with the butterflies on them she would see her own hand taking the action of opening the door, and then AND only then would she come to a realization that she indeed had her physical body, or at least, she seemed to have it. Once that realization hit her she would feel her feet wet from the small layer of water on the bottom.
The door would open and nothing would seem out of the ordinary, just another door behind it some 10 meters away. But once she'd step though the first one Yorukasa would come to visualize her own 3 personal most shameful moment she could remember as if this place was drawing those exact memories from her mind and forcing them to manifest around her. And as if that wasn't enough next it would draw out memories of her 3 most sad moments. Afterwards it would all stop dispersing and leaving the girl be, however the door before her showed 2 butterflies instead of just one like the first one she had just opened.

Sumiyaka gritted his teeth, so that was it huh? Finding out the whole point of this training. Well, first they needed to stay safe, they were so out in the open here and he needed to get on the other side of the wall to his friend. "I can't see inside the box! He put seals on it!" he called out. I can see you however, but I can't see Sensei anywhere..And I can't see far enough like this to completely defend you as well.." he called out to his friend as he kept an 'eye' on him. he took a quick peek up at Yorukasa to see how she was doing..and if that was really Yorukasa to begin with. 'Well sensei...you have us at a disadvantage here..' he mentally projected to his mentor as he looked for away around or through the stupid wall.

Sumiyaka would note that it was really Yorukasa's body laying there, he still couldn't spot his sensei with his normal 360 vision but that simply meant he was outside of a 5 meter range, which wouldn't be that hard in this large of an environment.
And using his telescopic vision would involve turning his head to look in various directions which would give away what he is doing and would thus become avoidable by his sensei, assuming he is fast enough and knows about the workings of the Byakugan, which he seemed to.

As Yorukasa layed there weeping steps could be heard on the low waterbed approaching her.
It was her sensei who was slowly walking towards her with a smile on his face.
I'm sorry that you had to go through that, Yorukasa-chan...but you have to learn."
He said as he kneeled down beside her and gave her shoulder a light pet.
"Shhhhhhh! It's ok...it's ok...it was just a Genjutsu barrier inside my inner world...these doors lead to the secret information my mind holds, and the further you go the worse they become...you just opened the first door...there are 6 more after this one, and they get worse each time."
He explained as he picked the girl up and carried her back past the first door as they would close on their own again. He would carry her further into the hallway and through another type of paper door, similar to the ones she went through but red in color.
beyond it there would be something that looked like a study room with a thee corner of sorts. He would lay her down on some pillows there, strangely here...there was no layer of water. Or so it would seem at first until she saw that it was there, only the floor they were on was constructed slightly above it, the floor being smoothe looking wooden planks with some space between them where underneath the thin layer of water would still be visible. There were quite a few shelves there with scrolls on them.
Tonbo would sit down besides Yorukasa after laying her down and waiting for her to calm down.

Sumiyaka growled and turned his head this and that way to keep his 'blind spot' fron stayin in one location for too long. It was something he was used to doing, both to confuse enemys that he was still looking around and that he might already be using his telescopic view and the blind spot thing. "There is something with that package." he said, curious to what was in it and why he would leave such a thing there. He moved around the wall to his friend, getting back to back with his so he would be easyer to protect. Then he would look around to places were Tonbo might be hiding such as large obstacles. He would switch between telescopic viewing and 360 viewing, only looking with his telescopic view at the hidingplaces. 'Come out Tonbo sensei..' he thought

The Jounin smiled and let out a soft chuckle at the young girls reaction and pet the top of her head a bit and nodded to her.
"Naturally. You are a Yamanaka after-all. And it is mostly thanks to your clan's secrets and the barrier unit that I have the abilities I have, that I am able to see without having eyes and much more." He would say standing up and removing his hand from her head as he would start to slowly walk back out of the room.
"I owe them all a great deal. That's why I'll teach you more than just Genjutsu and defending against it. I am going to make you exactly like me...."
He would stop and turn around looking at the girl with a smirk.
"A mind dweller. That's exactly what this training right here , right now is about, while your other two team mates are having a contest of wits against me, so far I think they're not being too clever."

He would chuckle and then motion the girl over as he stood in the doorway.
"Come now, I still have a few things to show you on how to navigate these kinds of environments...as a shinobi with your gifts this will probably become one of your most important abilities as well as tasks."

As the Hyuuga and the Nara stood back to back neither of them was able to spot the sensei's body anywhere, even the telescopic view didn't give Sumiyaka a location, either he has left the training grounds completely, or he is hiding very deep underneath the earth or he can fly and is high up in the sky, otherwise something is wrong here as he doesn't seem to be present and Sumiyaka's telescopic view allows him to almost see the whole training ground, unless Tonbo somehow also figured out that range and was hiding in the very furthest corner. If he was there at all.

The Jounin would flinch just a little from surprise when then young girl took his hand but smiled and let out a little happy chuckle.
"No, don't worry. You don't have to go blind for this. In fact, inside this environment I can perceive as well as you do visually if not better. For right now nothing you see is truly there, at least not in the material sense. This is the shape of my mind, or at least, your mind's translation of it."

He would lead her back towards the doors which, she would notice were now closed again.
"Alright, well first, before I teach you how to set up barriers like these or perform other defensive duties, let's get you ready on the offensive." He nodded to her confirming his own words it seemed and then pointed to the first door.
"Inside this world things work a little different than in the real world. That is because you don't actually have a body. Like I explained before, everything you perceive in here is merely your mind's way of decoding the information it is receiving and sending out. An Operating system so to speak, if you are knowledgeable with computers." He would smirk and wait for her to approach the door staying behind himself as he continued.
"In this state however, even when outside your body you can call upon your reserves of chakra from it. That part although it in reality functions a little differently to you here will appear to function exactly as in the normal world. Just never sacrifice for chakra in this state, charging only and be careful not to empty your bodies reserves while being technically or fully separated from it. Results of such acts WILL be fatal at an instant." He spoke seriously.

"Now the key is off-course practice, as is with everything. But this is how breaking through mind barriers works." Tonbo began his explanation as he floated slightly behind her. " You must charge your astral body with chakra and then choose an amount of chakra you think is right, the right amount being equal or just slightly over the amount of chakra used to keep the barrier in place. Then you must perform a Kai on the barrier and push your own chosen amount of chakra into it. You will sense feedback from the barrier then if you keep focused and if your amount was off you'd be able to sense it and adjust it then, but it's hard to do this correctly without good practice because you'd have to adjust your flow of chakra within a mere second after sensing the feedback...if you'd be able to sense it correctly in the first place." He explained.

"Why don't you go ahead and try it."

In Game terms this works as followed ;
You charge chakra, you choose an amount of chakra you think is appropriate, you perform Kai on the barrier and then push your chakra inside.
You will then (based on a Gen Stat roll) get one or multiple, or even all of these factors as feedback :

Whether you were off, Whether the number should be higher or lower, by how much it is off, approx range of numbers within which the correct number resides and so on.
You will then be given one chance to adjust this number.

Then if you are confident that you have done this correctly you'll be able to pass through, if you have done it wrong though and pass through there are two possible outcomes...
If your chakra was lower than the needed amount you suffer half of the effects of the barrier's wrath.
If the amount of chakra you used was higher than needed you will still be able to pass but will suffer
1 FCS damage getting a small mental shock.

The trick is to guess the rank of the Barrier I'd say which gives away the chakra;
D = 2,3
C = 4,5
B = 6,7
A = 8 , 9, 10
S = 11, 12, 13

The force would shoot back towards the Yamanaka girl. She would feel a strange tingling sensation it was as if her body was partially flowing into the door itself physically rather than mentally, for which she would realize that her form right now was not physical indeed. It would shoot back into her system then as she would sense that the amount of chakra she had sent into the door was NOT ENOUGH , she needed something higher.
Tonbo's hand would strike the door then in the blink of an eye as the Jounin exclaimed.
"KAI!!!"

Opening the door and then glanced to Yorukasa and shook his head.
"What did I just tell you about a split second chance to adjust? How did you plan on adjusting the amount of chakra upwards when you just pushed all you had in? You need to be more careful. Be this a real situation you would have just blocked yourself from this door completely....costing you either your sanity or your grace having to force the door open, knowing for sure you did wrong. Make sure you always have enough to correctly adjust the flow...meaning, have more in your system than you might need." He explained and sighed as the door opened.

"Alright...next one. Better luck." He coughed and gave the girl a second chance but tapped her shoulder to let her know it wasn't bad at all. She was doing fine.

"Sumiyaka kun, this is my plan. I'm gonna attach my shadow to your's and you're gonna open the box, if something goes wrong I can assist that way." Shikataro performed his seals and stretched his shadow to connect with Sumiyaka's body.

Sumiyaka nodded. "Yes, I was thinking of opening the box. It's clear Tonbo sensei wants us to open the damn thing. Either to show us something or to play us for fools...Well, better be fools now then be fools later. Lets see this as a learning experience.." he said. "So, go ahead." he said, indicating he wanted you to attach your shadow to his own. He saw your shadows connect and walked to the package, still looking this and that way with his telescopic view. "Don't stray to far, I can't check on your safty with my Byakugan like this." he said and kneeled at the package, inspecting it for a moment. "Well...here goes nothing.." he said to you and picked up the box first. We're sooo going to be screwed...

The Hyuuga would pick up the box, but nothing happened, he now simply held the box in his hands, the present wrapper still around it and the top of the box still sealed. His Byakugan still unable to penetrate the object to see what's inside.

As the Yamanaka girl would focus and charge her chakra into the door she would get a rather plesant sensation in return and her FCS would instantly become replenished by 1. She would feel more clarity in her thought suddenly and more confidence in her actions, not by much, but enough to be noticible.
Somehow she knew there could be no other way than that she had guessed the correct amount at once, sensed it out through simple intuition.

The door would not open yet before her, but according to the explanation given that shouldn't have been the case, all that she knew is that she could open this door safely now without any fear of danger. And step onto the next one.

Tonbo would smile and nod pleased seeing the emotions of confidence stirr up in her somewhat seemingly was enough for the Jounin to deduce the fact she had succeeded on pure intuition, which he knew gave an added bonus he didn't tell her of yet. He'd let out a little pleased chuckle as he couldn't fully contain his need to express his approval.

He let out a sigh and looked over to his friend. "Opening it now, keep an eye out.." he said and started to undo the ribon before opening the box, bracing himself for something to happen. His senses acute and ready.

As Sumiyaka would remove the ribbon his Byakugan would see a charge of chakra coming free from a sealing mark left on the ribbon, the charge wasn't large or seemed particularly dangerous on it's own. Especially as it would near instantly shoot into the box, passing by the fabric of it without dealing it any harm.

The box would then let out a small buzzing sound and shake a little, but the Hyuuga could still not see inside as the box stirred as if some motion was taking place inside.

Inside Tonbo's inner world the Jounin would draw another smile on his face all of a sudden and release a little laugh.
"You should hurry up a little bit. We've only got about 4 minutes left to train you here Yorukasa-chan. It seems I had underestimated your team-mates slightly. But then again, they did give us this full hour."
He said a little mocking but still pleased with the results it seemed.
